Kevin Durant reportedly signed and agreed to a ten day contract with the Toronto Raptors during the NBA Finals, but sources say he planned to leave and re-sign with the Warriors if the Raptors were to have lost game three.
“At the end of the day it’s all about building a legacy. Y’all know who I am,”
said Durant when asked about his controversial decision. He then proceeded to send out a flurry of response tweets to angry Golden State fans.
"I have to do what's best for me. Right now, that means signing with the better team. I can always come back. Especially if Golden State becomes the better team again."
Toronto went on to win game three 123 - 109 in Golden State, but Durant decided to give the Warriors another shot and re-signed for the remainder of the series.
In a dreadful turn of events, Durant suffered a gruesome tear of his achilles tendon in Game 5 of the finals after having just re-signed with the Warriors and getting settled back in San Fransisco. Toronto offered him a one day contract so that he could win a ring with Drake at his side, but Durant explained
"My legacy would be tarnished if I took that deal. I've got a lot of thinking to do entering free agency."
On the first day of free agency, Durant signed with the Brooklyn Nets alongside the likes of Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan. Many believe his decision to re-sign with Golden State during the finals was simply to prove his loyalty to the Warriors organization before his departure.
The Durant saga will continue in 2020. Will he abandon the Nets too? And will he get a psychiatrist for his Twitter fingers? Only time will tell.
